OSU Microscopy Laboratory Dr. Charlotte Ownby
Oklahoma State University Microscopy Laboratory (www.microscopy.okstate.edu) is a highly specialized research support and teaching lab that uses some of the most powerful microscopes ever developed to peek into the very molecular structure of all kinds of materials.
Originally established in 1977 on the OSU campus, the lab serves over 200 clients from the various OSU colleges. Under the direction of Dr. Charlotte Ownby, the Microscopy Lab is newly installed in Venture I in OTRP. The Lab is prepared to provide access to its specialized scanning transmission electron and laser scanning confocal microscopes not only to faculty and students at OSU, but also to private technology businesses needing a very close view of materials and substances, including human and animal tissue used in diagnostic work.
The lab houses both scanning and transmission electron microscopes equipped with digital imaging and X-ray microanalysis capabilities. These instruments allow the visualization of structures at very high magnifications and with ultra-high resolution, down to nanometers (one billionth of a meter). With the addition of X-ray analysis capability, the elemental composition of these structures can be determined. The transmission electron microscope enables imaging of the internal features of samples whereas the scanning electron microscope shows us the surface features of samples at high power and resolution. Unlike other microscopy labs, the OSU lab offers confocal microscopy which provides the ability to locate different macromolecules, organelles or structures within samples using fluorescent dyes to determine if they are related. The confocal microscope can be used to make a 3-D image or a movie of the sample. The Lab offers instruction in microscopy techniques on an individual basis as well as through a graduate course offered in the Fall semester. Tours of the facility are also available upon request and a list of these services and prices is available at www.microscopy.okstate.edu
By placing the Microscopy Lab in Venture I in the Oklahoma Technology and Research Park—where it can serve both academic and business requirements—the University is acting on its commitment to increase sponsored research relationships with private industry. Creating technology commercialization from university laboratories to new products on the assembly line is a large piece of OSU’s economic development mission and part of Governor Brad Henry’s technology-led EDGE program.
